Later, the intermediates and Brenda got off the bus at none other then Victoria Park. The large group bounded across
the grassy park, dotted with weeds. The trees loomed peacefully above them. They stopped in the middle of the park.
"Alright children, lets lay down our picnic blankets. Once were done that, you may do whatever you want, but stay
in the park." Brenda instructed. Some of the girls picnicked, some of the boys played football, some just hung out, some slept,
and some entertained themselves in the only way they knew how. Doing homework.
"And what did I tell you earlier today about doing homework?" Brenda asked the homework doing group which included Nick,
Mimma, Madison, Jessica Ducharme, Evita, and Melissa.
"Um. . .not to do it while were on a field trip?" Nick replied uncertainty.
"Indeed I did! Now go out and enjoy yourselves. This is a day for you!" Brenda told them. The children ran off, and Brenda
returned to the picnic blanket where Shannah was laying.
"Ms. Zadorsky?"
"Mm hmm?"
"Can we do this every day?" Shannah asked hopefully.
"Don't you think you'd
soon get tired of it, Shannah?" Brenda questioned.
"I suppose so... Every other day?"
"I haven't had so much
fun since the day we put glue on Ms. Berry’s seat!" Peter piped in.
"I can't understand how children as nice
as you can manage to play such awful jokes on people." Brenda said.
"Oh, it's easy." Christine stated proudly.
"But
why do it?"
"Well, how else can we get Mrs. Fraumeni’s attention?" Hannah asked defensively.
"Yes." Mimma
agreed.
"Oh, I see. Well, we'll have to think about that one." Brenda paused, and thought for a momant about what she
was just told. "How else can we get Mrs. Fraumeni’s attention?" Then it popped into her head. "All right, everybody.
Over here."
"What are we gonna do?" Maddy asked.
"Let's think of something to sing in four part harmony for
the new teacher when she comes."
"Mrs. Fraumeni doesn't like us to sing in more then two parts." Allissa told Brenda.
"Well,
perhaps we can change her mind. Now, what songs do you know?"
"We don't know any songs."
"Not any?"
"We
don't even know how to sing in more then two parts." Christie explained.
"Nope." Mimma agreed.
"Well, let's
not lose any time. You ought to learn."
"But how?" Christie questioned.
Brenda picked up her guitar,
sat down on a bench, while the children crowded around,
strummed her guitar, and sang the scale.
"We know that! We can do it in two part harmony!" Emma exclaimed.
"Well, let’s do it in four."
"How?"
"Easy! It’s almost the same as two part, but you just add two more parts. Lets try." The children and Brenda sang
a four part scale beautifully. . .well maybe not that beautifully, but nice enough. . .
"Woah! I didn’t know we could do that!" Stephanie exclaimed. "Lets do it again!"
"Alright! But I have an idea. Let’s do it different classes. 7M can go first followed by 8F, followed by 7C and then
8C" Brenda explained. And so the intermediates sang the scale, a but better then the last time. "Good! Now all we will need
to do is learn everything else that it takes to sing a song in 4 parts!" Brenda said winking.
"We’ll learn something new every day, and I’ll teach you The Sound of Music while were at it." Brenda
said. There was a rumble of agreement heard amongst the children. These children aren’t so bad after all. Brenda
thought to herself. Then coming back to reality, she shouted, "Alright children, let’s not waste anymore time! I
have song parts to teach you!"
